Benefits of Cardiac Rehabilitation
Cardiac rehabilitation brings positive reinforcement to heart patients. By enhancing communication, teaching healthy living, and bringing structured rehab to patients, studies show the program increases a heart patient’s chance of survival.
Heart patients on Medicare are generally allowed up to 36 cardiac rehabilitation classes following a heart attack or other heart-related incident, yet many times, patients attend only a few, if any, of the classes. An article posted on WebMD states that patients who attend the full cardiac rehabilitation program have higher chances of survival than fellow heart patients who do not attend.
“In an effort to determine if more is better when it comes to cardiac rehabilitation, researchers analyzed data from 5% of the nation’s Medicare beneficiaries, including more than 30,000 heart patients who had participated in at least one cardiac rehabilitation session between 2000 and 2005.
About half the patients attended 24 sessions or fewer, biostatistician and study researcher Bradley G. Hammill, MS, tells WebMD.
Over roughly four years of follow-up, patients who attended all 36 reimbursed sessions were:
- 47% less likely to die and 31% less likely to have a heart attack as patients who attended just one.
- 22% less likely to die and 23% less likely to have a heart attack than patients who attended 12 sessions.
- 14% less likely to die and a 12% less likely to have a heart attack than patients who attended 24 sessions.
The study will appear in the upcoming issue of the American Heart Association journal Circulation.” Continue reading the article…
One would wonder why, given the odds, all heart patients do not attend the weekly sessions. For many, it’s due to the doctor/patient relationship; some cardiac physicians have been slower in seeing the benefits the rehabilitation courses bring to the patients. As studies emerge, however, courses should see an increase of patients attending. Patients tend to trust their doctor’s wholeheartedly and if their doctor is not recommending the treatment, the heart patient will rarely pursue the program.
