Heart Health: Words of Wisdom for a Healthy Heart

“It takes heart to be a hero” –Jump Rope for Kids

Heart Disease #1 Killer

February=Heart Health Month

As this month comes to a close, it’s time to reflect on all you did to increase your heart health. To decrease your odds of heart disease, heart attack, or stroke, it’s important to live a healthy lifestyle all the time. Don’t let a setback deter you from improving your overall health. If you want a piece of that birthday cake, eat a small piece. If you want to enjoy a glass of wine with dinner, go for it! Just don’t overdo it. Remember, almost everything is okay in moderation.

Know your most important numbers:

  • Total Cholesterol: < 200 mg/dL
  • Good Cholesterol: ≥ 50 mg/dL
  • Bad Cholesterol: < 100 mg/dL
  • Blood Pressure: <120/80 mmHg
  • Triglycerides: < 150 mg/dL

From the American Stroke Association

“Did you know that people who smoke, may be overweight, have high blood pressure, diabetes or a family history of heart disease or stroke are at increased risk of being disabled or dying from a stroke? These are key risk factors for stroke. The American Heart Association/American Stroke Association has launched a new initiative called Take 2 To Save 2 and it’s simple to get involved! Here’s how:

  • Take two minutes to visit www.powertoendstroke.org/take2 to learn how you can prevent stroke by reducing your risk factors
  • Then, pass it on by sending others you care about special health messages that just might save their lives

There are pre-written health message for you to choose from, you can just cut and paste them into your medium of choice. So, whether you email, Facebook, tweet, text, or call your friends and family, there is a message for you.”

From the American Heart Association

“Life’s Simple 7: My Life Check was designed by the American Heart Association with the goal of improved health by educating the public on how best to live. These measures have one unique thing in common: any person can make these changes, the steps are not expensive to take and even modest improvements to your health will make a big difference. Start with one or two. This simple, seven step list has been developed to deliver on the hope we all have–to live a long, productive healthy life: Get Active, Control Cholesterol, Eat Better, Manage Blood Pressure, Lose Weight, Reduce Blood Sugar, and Stop Smoking”

From the Mayo Clinic

“If you have major depression and have had a heart attack, you’re at a much higher risk to die of a heart attack. Although this is very sobering, you need to know the facts. We know that chemicals in our brain are not in proper balance when depressed. When people suffer from depression, they are not as likely to take care of themselves properly. People don’t eat right and commonly don’t exercise. Sleep is usually disturbed in some way, too. So if you have depression and heart disease, pay extra attention to your physical and mental health. Don’t put off asking for help. You and your body deserve it!”

From the Centers for Disease Control (CDC)

“Most of the sodium we consume is in the form of salt, and the vast majority of sodium we consume is in processed and restaurant foods. Too much sodium is bad for your health. It can increase your blood pressure and your risk for a heart attack and stroke. Heart disease and stroke are the first and third killers of men and women in the United States each year.”

From WebMD
“In a new study of women, it’s found that being sedentary may be a more important predictor of heart disease than being overweight. The lean women out there that don’t do any physical activity are at just as high a risk as a heavy woman who doesn’t do any physical activity.” To watch the video, click here.

With heart health month coming to an end, I hope you spent some time getting to know more about what you can do to improve your heart. Remember that oral chelation therapy is another way to improve your heart health. By removing the heavy metals and toxins from your arteries, chelation opens the passageways, allowing blood to flow freely. The increased free-flow allows for rich nutrients and oxygen to be dispersed throughout your entire body. This is turn helps with other physical ailments you may be experiencing. For more information regarding the physical benefits of oral chelation, click here.

Love Your Heart: Find Happiness Within Yourself

“Reflect upon your present blessings — of which every man has many — not on your past misfortunes, of which all men have some.” -Charles Dickens

Reprinted from Funny Times

Everyone’s heard the old adage about the glass being half-full or half-empty. Which way do you look at it?

When depression, anxiety, nervousness, or anger run your life on a long term basis, your odds of heading towards heart disease, and eventually a heart attack, increase. It’s been known for many years that negative feelings have a negative impact on your heart, but a recently completed study wanted to determine whether being happy could help protect your heart.

This study shows that people who view the world optimistically are less likely to develop heart disease than those who have negative personalities. People who are generally happy with life will obviously go through moments of stress, depression, or anxiety. However, they tend to figure their way out of the negative emotions quickly and return to a positive outlook. So having an overall positive outlook on life may help shield your heart from heart health related problems. Obviously, being happy is not a total deterrent for heart disease, but it seems to help.

Bertram Pitt, a University of Michigan Professor of medicine, says that improving social skills and decreasing overall social anxiety may lower heart disease. By incorporating the following suggestions into your daily lifestyle, those with long-time negative dispositions can become much happier.

  1. Express gratitude on a normal basis.
  2. Practice being optimistic.
  3. Engage in frequent acts of kindness.
  4. Visualize your best self.
  5. Savor joyful events.
  6. Practice forgiveness.
  7. Get a good night’s sleep often.
  8. Eat a regular healthy diet and exercise often.
  9. Enjoy sexual activity.

Living your life angry at others for things that are happening in your life or for things they have done to you gives them the control over your own emotions, happiness, and lifestyle. Though forgiveness can be very difficult at times, it is essential in order to move on and enjoy your life to your best ability.

You are not hardwired into being either negative or positive. Things can change in your life; the important thing is to learn how to deal with pessimistic emotions and attitudes. By dealing with the negative aspects of life, you increase your longevity and happiness. Plus, you decrease your chances of heart disease, heart attacks, and stroke. People who are happy tend to live a healthier lifestyle without having to try as hard. Plus happiness produces positive chemical changes in your body, helping you deal with stress and anxiety naturally.

Karina W. Davidson PhD, of Columbia University Medical Center suggests devoting at least 20 minutes a day to doing something you enjoy. “You have to commit to it,” she says. “Schedule the time and stick to it.”

Liquid Oral Chelation is another great way to help protect your heart from heart disease. By removing toxins and heavy metals from your veins and arteries, chelation therapy helps cleanse your body, allowing your blood to flow freely. This brings nutrients and oxygen to all parts of your body. For more information regarding chelation therapy, contact Cardio Renew.

Loving a Stress Free Life

“Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.” John Lennon

Heart of the City by Mark Tatulli 5-23-08

Everyone feels stress at this time of year. The holidays are over and the next work holiday generally isn’t until Memorial Day weekend. Tax time is approaching and winter feels like it’s been going on forever. Though February is full of things happening (Heart Health Month, Super Bowl Sunday, Valentine’s Day, Chinese New Year, President’s Day, Mardi Gras, the beginning of Lent) it’s easy to feel blah and stressed out during this time of the year.

I received this article awhile back: “Research shows conclusively that the most common day for heart attacks is Monday. Statistics spike on Monday mornings, in particular, since heart attacks occur between 4 a.m. and 10 a.m. more than any other six-hour period. The Women’s Heart Foundation notes that blood platelets are stickier in the morning hours, which can contribute to an attack.” Continue reading…

Ways to Relieve Stress for Heart Health

The stress of returning back to normalcy after a weekend off can be stressful. It’s important to remember that what you do for one day is not as important as how you change your life over time. Making sure your heart is healthy is a lifestyle change. It’s important to exercise and eat right everyday. Another important thing you can do for yourself is reduce the stress in your life. Here are 5 things you can do to help relieve your stress:

  1. Become passionate about something and devote at least 15 minutes to your passion everyday! Journaling, walking, or sexual pleasure can help reduce your stress. All three of these are great ways to relieve emotional stress. Walking and sex help relieve physical stress by working out your entire body.
  2. Practice Yoga: It’s true, this combination of breathing exercises, physical movement, stretching, and meditation is a great way to relieve stress. Take 5-10 minutes every morning when you wake up and greet the day through yoga. If you do not know yoga, try completing easy stretches in the shower; the hot water along with the stretches helps loosen your muscles and reduces physical stress.
  3. Get a massage! Oh, this one is good. From the music, to the scents, to closing your mind for at least a ½ hour, a massage is a great way to loosen the tension in your body, which in turn relieves the tension in your mind. Make sure you drink a lot of water afterwards to flush the toxins from your system. What’s really fun is to grab a friend or loved one and exchange shoulder massages—it’s also a great time to catch up with the other’s life.
  4. Music Therapy: This is one of my favorite ways to relax. If I find the right song, I can just really let it all go. I sing loudly and dance my cares away. Or I play a really upbeat playlist on my iTunes and start cleaning. It’s a great way to work in exercise as well which also helps reduce stress.
  5. Drink lots of water and green tea; consume less caffeine and no soda. Monitoring your drinks can really make a difference in how you feel on a daily basis. Drinking too much soda can make you feel weighed down or lethargic. Caffeine can make you really jittery, whereas green tea is loaded with antioxidants and really good for you. Water is the main component of your body so by replenishing your lost fluids on a regular basis, you will feel naturally more energized and alert.

There are so many other things you can do to relieve stress. The important thing is to find what works for you. What do you need to do on a daily basis to relieve stress in your life? When you relieve your physical and emotional drama, you are taking a big step in making your heart healthy. Play games with your kids, practice brain stimulation exercises, have friends over for a game night, go out dancing with your significant other or join a group class on your own, put yourself in position to meet new friends. Find what you enjoy and pursue it. Your mental health will thank you and your heart will thank you.

Liquid Oral Chelation Therapy

Another way to reduce the plaque in your arteries is to try oral chelation therapy from Cardio Renew. Liquid oral chelation is the removal of toxic heavy metals and mineral deposits in the body that clog your heart. Rather than a 6 month IV form treatment, liquid oral chelation therapy is a 6 week program that brings results fast. If your blood flow is restricted due to clogged arteries, your body is not receiving the proper nourishment it needs, which causes heart problems and other health issues. Cardio Renew can help reverse this problem. For more information, call us at 800-578-1215.

Heart Health: Everyday Love

“Take my hand and walk with me, And tell me who you love; Make a wish if you can see, The first star from above.”

~The Samples

One Big Happy by Rick Detorie

Yesterday was Valentine’s Day and I have to admit, from an early age, I’ve never been a fan of this one holiday. I dislike the idea of a preconceived date to tell someone you love them. Instead, one should find little ways to celebrate love everyday. Calling someone just to say hello, sending a card in the mail (it is fun to get something besides bills once in awhile), including a simple (non-embarrassing) note in your child’s lunch, washing the dishes when it isn’t your turn, giving your loved one a hug for no reason at all… all these things tell the important people in your life that you love them. And let’s face it, random acts of love all the time mean so much more in the long run.

The same can be said about the importance of keeping your heart healthy. Living a healthy lifestyle only once in awhile does nothing to keep your heart healthy in the long run. It’s important to live right everyday and allow for the random indulgences every once in awhile instead. Eating healthy and exercising daily is the best way to guarantee you are doing something productive for your heart.

Studies show that people who live an active lifestyle have less symptoms of heart disease than those who are sedentary. Even if you exercised 30 minutes every day, if you sit around the rest of the day, you aren’t doing much for your health. Simple ways to increase activity in your day would be to park farther away from where you are going, take the stairs instead, go for a walk around the neighborhood, and get up and stretch every hour while sitting at a desk job. Exercising every day is the best way to keep up a healthy, active lifestyle and if you are unable to do that, plan on at least 3 days a week. Your heart depends on it.

Eating a heart healthy diet is also very important. Everyday, you should consume vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and other healthy foods. Indulgences are acceptable every once in awhile, in fact, it’s encouraged. Studies show that chocolate is good for you as both a mood enhancer and an antioxidant. So eating dark chocolate and in quantities of 3.5 oz each day can be good for you. If you eat healthy for your heart every day, your chance of heart disease decreases. However, if you eat unhealthy most days and eat a vegetable and whole grain meal once a week, it really doesn’t do anything for you.

Practice a heart healthy diet and exercise every day. This will in turn improve your cholesterol levels, help you lose weight, and help manage your blood pressure. Another way to help reduce the symptoms of heart disease is to take oral chelation therapy from Cardio Renew. Chelation therapy removes heavy metals and toxins from your blood stream. This allows for increased blood flow, rich in nutrients and oxygen, throughout your body. For more information on improving your heart health, contact us.

Periodontal Disease and Heart Disease: Is there a Connection?

“If you are ever in doubt as to whether to kiss a pretty girl, always give her the benefit of the doubt.” ~Thomas Carlyle

Pearls Before Swine by Stephan Pastis

from Pearls Before Swine by Stephan Pastis (this may relate better to the Monday post but I liked it)

Think back to your first kiss. Do you remember the way you felt; that nervous flutter in your stomach and the fuzziness in your brain? I remember being extremely aware of every move I made; from my body leaning toward the one standing in front of me to the tilt of the head. I also vividly remember the fresh taste of a just cleaned mouth. Regardless of whether it’s your very first kiss or the one you received this morning before leaving for work, it’s always the best when a) they know how to kiss, b) there’s love or real emotion behind it and c) their mouth is fresh and clean. It should be said that since my first kiss, the fresh minty taste of another’s mouth is one of the most satisfying pleasures in life.

“May I print a kiss on your lips?” I said; And she nodded her full permission; So we went to press and I rather guess; We printed a full edition.” ~Joseph Lilientha

Recent research shows a strong link between periodontal disease and heart disease. One theory is that the harmful bacteria in your mouth travels through the gums to your arteries, attaches to the deposits on the walls of your arteries, and contributes to build-up and blockage resulting in heart attacks or strokes. Although there are no defined answers, the studies show time and again that those with periodontal disease have a higher risk of heart disease. People with advanced gum disease tend to have a higher occurrence of clogged arteries in their heart. Researchers say that the study will need to persist over the course of the next few years to continue monitoring the individuals participating. While the study is being conducted, you should take preventative action by protecting your mouth and heart today.

“Kissing is like drinking salted water.  You drink, and your thirst increases.” ~Chinese Proverb

Hundreds of different bacteria exist inside the human mouth. Most of them are harmless but some of them lead to periodontal disease which is an infection of the gums. Periodontal disease is divided into two stages: 1) gingivitis and 2) periodontitis. Gingivitis is reversible and is easily treated through regular dental checkups. Periodontitis is more severe in which the tissue surrounding the teeth become damaged and teeth fall out, become loose, or have to be removed by a dentist.

According to the ADA, if you experience any of the following, it could be an indicator of periodontal disease and you should visit your dentist as soon as possible:

  • gums that bleed when you brush your teeth
  • red, swollen or tender gums
  • gums that have pulled away from the teeth
  • bad breath that doesn’t go away
  • pus between your teeth and gums
  • loose teeth
  • a change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite
  • a change in the fit of partial dentures

“I wasn’t kissing her, I was whispering into her mouth” ~Chico Marx

Brushing and flossing your teeth and rinsing your mouth are benefits not only for yourself but for those around you as well. From your coworkers to your kids, to the one you wake up with in the morning, that fresh, just brushed feeling can provide lasting relationships. Imagine someone with really bad breath leaning over your shoulder. Your first instinct is to finish up the conversation or explanation as quickly as possible. Who would have thought that a clean mouth could save your life as well? Follow these simple steps for a cleaner healthier mouth and a brighter smile:

  • Brush at least twice a day using a soft bristled toothbrush and fluoride based toothpaste
  • Replace your toothbrush every 3 months (also replace it after you have a cold or if someone else “borrows” it)
  • Floss between your teeth at least once a day, use an oral rinse to clean your tongue
  • Visit a dentist regularly for cleaning and checkups and dental procedures when needed
  • Eat a balanced diet, limit between meal snacks, and avoid sugary drinks
